Diversity and distribution of freshwater sponges in large-scale reservoirs in Northeast Thailand
บทคัดย่อ ( Abstract )
Freshwater sponges are sessile benthic animals and filter feeders, which play important roles in aquatic ecosystems. This neglect animal has been practical used in the fields of medicine, cosmetics, ceramics and indicator of environmental change. However, a little is still known about freshwater sponges in Thailand. For a global assessment, approximately 250 species of freshwater sponges have been reported worldwide including eight species from Thailand. Species richness of Thai freshwater sponges is probably underestimated, according to recent discovery of new species and new records from northeast Thailand. More investigations are needed to fulfil the knowledge of inland sponges, not only diversity and distribution but also ecological and utilization aspects. From literature review and preliminary investigation, freshwater sponges can be frequently found in reservoirs. Therefore, this research project aims to study the diversity and distribution of freshwater sponges in large-scale reservoirs in northeast Thailand. The findings will be useful information to contribute and extend knowledge on Thai freshwater sponges and to promote a sustainable exploitation of this bioresource.
